Fergus Wilson: Day of reckoning for property mogul's PCC bid

Property tycoon Fergus Wilson will today learn if he will be able to stand for the role of police and crime commissioner.

The eccentric millionaire fell at the first hurdle when electoral returning officer Nadeem Aziz barred him from next month's election.

Last week Mr Wilson applied for a judicial review into the "pedantic" decision, which was adjourned until today.

The former boxer, of Boughton Monchelsea, will appear at the Queen’s Bench Division Administrative Court of London's High Court at 11am.

The case is listed as a full-day 'rolled up' hearing meaning the court will first decide if a judicial review is warranted and if it is will immediately proceed to dealing with his disqualification.

Mr Wilson did concede that even if he wins his case he may not have enough time to run, saying: "It's a practical issue. I really don't know if I'd run."

Even if he is successful and goes on to win the May 5 election he is expected to be challenged over a conviction for assault.

Under PCC guidelines a commissioner can be challenged once elected if they have been convicted of an imprisonable offence.

Mr Wilson said while common assault can result in a custodial sentence, his offence held a maximum punishment of a financial penalty.
