Motorists faced severe delays on the M20 after an earlier accident between a lorry and a car near Maidstone.
One lane of the three-lane motorway was closed on the westbound carriageway between Junction 9 for Ashford and Junction 8 for Leeds Castle and the Maidstone Services.
Police say thankfully that no-one was injured as a result of the accident which happened at around 10.20am
It was re-opened fully more than nine hours later at 7.40pm.
Highways officers dealt with traffic management, but explained there was a fuel spillage that is being cleaned up and there is some queuing as a result.
Smaller routes through Ashford are also becoming congested as drivers seek alternative routes, the motorway is expected to be closed in the area for some time as the clean up is completed.
One woman from Rochester trying to get home from Ashford is stuck in the jams. She said: "The M20 traffic problems combined with the A2 closure is a complete nightmare."
There are a series of weekend closures of the A2 as well as night-time closures of the M2 throughout September for resurfacing work and bridge repairs.
