A grandfather is warning others to keep their pay-and-display parking tickets after he was given two fines with no explanation.

Nick Whitworth visited Teston Bridge Country Park near Maidstone for a walk and to meet some friends earlier this month.

They went along the banks of the River Medway towards Yalding Locke and back again. He was parked up for four and a half hours from 10am to 1.30pm on June 7.

The fee is £2 a day or £3 on the weekend; a charge which Nick paid.

But on June 15 he received a PCN from Euro Car Parks, but the reason was unclear.

And this isn’t the first time it has happened as the 71-year-old was also fined for the exact same thing two months prior.

The man from Bearsted said: “When I first received a fine I thought damn and blast but then I thought ‘I think I have kept that ticket.’

“I got it out my car and sent a photo to Euro Car Parks to appeal.

“Luckily I had kept it and after that day I have always kept them.”

It would be a mantra that would come in handy when his second fine appeared and now wishes to warn others in case the issue occurs for anyone else.

The retired immigration officer said: “There is a camera at the entrance which catches you going in and out again, they don’t check the tickets.

“I kept the ticket but my worry is for all those who don’t they may be given fines when they shouldn’t.

“I told everyone in the car park on the second day to keep hold of your tickets as you can’t trust it.

“I spoke with the staff at the coffee kiosk there about it and they said people are always constantly coming to the car park to fiddle with the cameras so there could just be a fault with their system.”

On the first visit, Nick and his friends were all sent a PCN but the time in June only he was charged.

The grandfather had both PCNs rescinded but if he wasn’t able to, each fine would have cost him £70 which would be reduced to £40 if paid off within 14 days.

The park is run and managed by Kent County Council but a spokesman confirmed no issues with the car park operator had been raised.
