Drug addict stole hundreds of pounds of make-up

A drug addict stole hundreds of pounds worth of make-up and perfume from shops and chemists, a court heard.

Lee-Ann Smith, 23, stole £400 of make-up and beauty products from Payden Chemists in Aylesford last September and was seen by staff at House of Fraser, Maidstone, putting several perfumes into a black canvas bag in December.

She admitted two charges of theft when she appeared before magistrates.

Smith also asked for more offences, involving the theft of hundreds of pounds worth of goods at two other shops, to be taken into consideration.

Magistrates heard Smith, an addict for many years, wanted money to not only fund her habit but to visit her partner’s aunt in Hampshire after she became ill.

She had, however, sought help with her addiction and was making progress.
Smith, of Napier Road, Gillingham, was given a 12 month community order, and ordered to pay £334 compensation to two stores.

Bench chairman Nick Crutchfield said: “We are pleased she is seeking the assistance she needs.”
