Drugs ring busted

A major drugs ring supplying crack cocaine and heroin to the streets of West Kent has been smashed by police.

Nineteen members of the gang, including men and women from Maidstone, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells are now behind bars following a series of trials.

Kent Police's Serious and Organised Crime Unit targeted the network following research into Class A drug distribution in the Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge area.

During an investigation between August and October 2007, officers seized drugs and gathered evidence against the drugs ring.

Detective Inspector Tom Richards from Kent Police's Serious and Organised Crime Unit says: "This investigation was launched to investigate drugs supply in West Kent. Our aim was to get to the people actively distributing heroin and crack cocaine and getting them off the streets. The covert work was just one aspect of the investigation. The team doing all the paperwork to get all the evidence together were just as valuable to the success of this case.

"When we arrested the network, many of them were users themselves who were supplying drugs to fund their own habits. However, there were also those who were supplying drugs on a commercial basis."

Det Insp Richards added: "It is testament to the hard work of these officers that there was a 100 per cent conviction rate in this case and all of the network are now serving their sentences."
