An "escaped hawk" caused major disruption for more than 300 people on their morning run today.

The unexpected visitor at the Maidstone Parkrun earlier today led to a unique event.

The escapee bird of prey was spotted during this morning's race which starts from near the Kent Life museum off Lock Lane, Sandling which was quickly reorganised.

The hawk, believed to have been called Bruno, was later seen sitting in a tree, according to witnesses and participants

The 331 runners and 29 volunteers had to remove any hi-vis equipment and be quiet throughout the run.

Small dogs were not allowed on the grounds.

Organisers said in statement on the Maidstone Parkrun Facebook page said: "We’ve never had a run quite like this - an escaped hawk meant no hi-vis, no shouting and no small dogs on the ground.

"But well done to the 331 people who ran, jogged and walked the course, 31 were first timers and 28 recorded new personal bests.

"The event was made possible by 29 quiet volunteers."

It has not been confirmed where the bird escaped from but is understood it has now been located and recovered.
