The family of a teenager found dead in a park have told KentOnline of their “overwhelming pain and devastation”.

Russel Burdette-Deakin, 17, was found at Mote Park in Maidstone at around 11am on Monday, just an hour before a planned search in the town to find him.

His mum Michelle Hallford-Nye described her first-born as an “adventurous boy” with the “soul of an angel”.

The family now want to raise awareness of the struggles people face, particularly younger men and women.

A joint statement from Russel’s loved ones said: “Russel left us too soon, and we are grappling with the overwhelming pain and devastation of his untimely departure.

“Russel was a bright and spirited soul who touched the lives of those around him and was loved by all. His infectious laughter, warm smile, and caring nature endeared him to family and friends alike. Despite the struggles he faced, Russell possessed a resilience that inspired everyone who knew him.

“Russel had a passion for music, friendships, crystals, tarot cards and was a talented dancer.

“He and his enthusiasm was contagious. Whether he was out with friends or home amongst loved ones, Russel’s zest for life shone brightly. He had a unique ability to connect with people, offering comfort and understanding during their own challenges.

“As we remember Russel, let us celebrate the positive impact and memories he had on our lives. In times of darkness, he showed us the importance of compassion, empathy, and the enduring power of love.

“It is crucial, now more than ever, to raise awareness about mental health challenges and to support one another in times of need. Let Russel’s memory be a beacon of hope, encouraging open conversations about mental health and breaking the stigma surrounding it.”

A fundraiser has been set up in memory of the former Maplesden Noakes and Mid Kent College student to help towards his funeral costs and other expenses.

The family added: “We would also like to thank the huge amount of love and support from the local community and his friends.

“Rest in peace baby boy you will forever be in our hearts and minds.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers searching for a missing teenage boy have located a body in Maidstone.

“We attended Mote Park at about 11am on Monday, where a body was located in woodland.

“While formal identification has not yet taken place, the family of a 17-year-old boy who was reported missing on Wednesday, September 6 has been informed.”
