Kaspars Ajuts death: Suspect in fatal Marsham Street, Maidstone, arson bailed

The suspect in an investigation into an alleged arson attack which killed a father-of-three has been bailed.

The 38-year-old man, who is believed to have been known to the victim, was released from custody today after police arrested him on Sunday night following the blaze in Marsham Street, Maidstone.

Kaspars Ajuts, 48, was dragged from the terraced house — where he is believed to have lived with his son, wife and daughter — but despite the best efforts of fire crews and paramedics died at the scene.

Fire investigation teams were at the property for most of yesterday. The blaze broke out in the attic but the cause is not yet known.

Next door neighbour Karen Hickman raised the alarm and watched as the family and a friend staggered out of the house.

One other man, thought to be Mr Ajut's son, remains in hospital — his injuries are described as serious but not life threatening. A woman, thought to me his wife,has been discharged from hospital.

A report of Mr Ajut's death has been passed to the coroner and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out soon.

The suspect, from Maidstone, has been bailed until Wednesday, April 19.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
