Fifty tons of wood have gone up in flames at a charity industrial unit.

Fire broke out at Royal British Legion Industries, Hall Road, Aylesford, on Sunday at 5pm.

At its height almost 50 firefighters were tackling the blaze, which took hold in an outside timber yard, where wood is stored before being made into pallets, which the charity sells to firms.

Four crews were on scene throughout the night and around 12 firefighters remain there this morning.

David Jessop, the charity's director of operations, said: "A lot of stock has been damaged, which has caused some disruption to our operations, but I'm pleased to say we are open and running as normal today."

Mr Jessop, who remained at the scene for most of the night, added: "There were people working at RBLI Industries on Sunday before the fire broke out.

"We do not yet know the cause, but we will co-operate fully with the fire service investigation and launch our own investigation.

"I'd like to thank our staff who remained at the scene and the fire service for their great response."

RBLI provides employment, training and support for people, including those with disabilities, plus care and support for ex-Servicemen, women and families.

The site has a manufacturing department which makes road signs and wooden pallets for a number of companies throughout the South East.
