Fire crews pay their tribute

FIREFIGHTERS from across Kent sounded their turnout bells for National Firefighters Day on Sunday.

And at 3.30pm, they held a minute's silence to remember colleagues around the world - in particular their New York counterparts who lost their lives on September 11.

The day was organised by the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund after it received a request from a child whose father went missing during last year's terrorist attack in America.

The fund distributed blue and red ribbons to fire stations across Kent to raise money for the families of firefighters killed in action.

Members of green watch, at Maidstone Fire Station, Loose Road, lined up outside their station and bowed their heads in a silent tribute.

Firefighter Dave Perks said: "It was to remember those who have lost their lives and give credit to those serving now. We are trying to make it an internationally recognised day."
