Firefighters received the first call to the blaze at 12.30pm but it wasn't until 33 hours later at 9.30pm last night that crews left.

A fire service spokesperson said: "A controlled building demolition has taken place and the final remaining hot spots have been extinguished.

"All firefighting activity has now been completed and crews have now left the scene."

Sutton Valence Hill, which was closed amid concerns about the structure's stability, has now reopened.

Neighbours said the house, which had been broken into many times, and had most of its windows smashed, had been so crammed full of papers, boxes and furniture that there was no room to move about.

The home is believed to have been purchased recently after lying derelict for many years.

At the height of the fire, four tenders and a height vehicle and bulk water carriers were also in attendance.

Crews used a fog spike, hose reel jets and compressed air foam to bring the blaze under control.

No-one was injured in the fire.
