POLICE are supporting the launch of Kent’s first Street Pastor scheme.

Volunteers will be recruited at the Life Church on Brewer Street in Maidstone, tonight at 8pm, where the Chief Superintendent for Mid Kent, Alaisdair Hope and church leaders will be present.

Street pastors will engage with people coming into the county town for a night out and will offer care and advice to them.

The aim is to ensure safety for residents and to reduce crime.

Ch Supt Alaisdair Hope said: "Although the first of its kind in Kent, the Street Pastor scheme has been trialed in many major cities in the UK and has a proven track record, including seeing drops in crime in areas where teams have been working. I am sure the results will pay tribute to the numerous organizations who have given their support, time and money to get this scheme off the ground, making the night-time economy even safer, both for Maidstone residents and those who want to come to the county town for a night out.

"Encouraged by the support of the police, council, health trusts, churches, the Bishop of Maidstone and Ascension Trust, I am sure this scheme will prove highly successful and would like to invite members of public to come along to the meeting tonight, especially if they would like more information on how to become a Street Pastor volunteer."
