Five men have been released on bail after they were arrested following a year long investigation into the theft of high value farming machinery.

In an operation involving 80 officers, two men were arrested in Maidstone, one in Lenham, one in Charing and one in Hollingbourne after Kent Police's Serious and Organised Crime Unit executed eight search warrants across Mid Kent, Weald and the West Kent.

They have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Kent Police's senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Tom Richards said: "Whilst the theft of farming machinery is rare in Kent, the theft of the equipment is understandably a considerable loss to the owner, both financially and to the continuity of their business.

"It is vital that members of the public are aware this type of crime goes on and the affect it has on our local farming community.

"We ask that everyone remains vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police immediately."

Tractors can cost between £63,000 and £75,000 and even second-hand machinery can be sold for up to £50,000. Some top of the range tractors cost more than £100,000.

Rural Officer, PC Mike Kingwell, working from the Rural Neighbourhood Team, based in Maidstone, urged farmers and land owners to report all crimes and suspicious activities.

He said: " We are trying to tackle the issues affecting residents in our rural areas. Theft of farm machinery and in particular tractors, is a blight to the agricultural community and can strip farmers of their livelihoods without these essential vehicles.

"The rural regions of Kent cover a substantial area, so a quick telephone call can make all the difference in the capture and conviction of those who commit these crimes.
