Flood warnings have been lifted along the River Medway today, but parts of west Kent remain on alert.

It means Maidstone, Tonbridge and East Peckham are no longer thought to be at risk.

But among those on alert, according to the Environment Agency, were areas along the River Teise and Beult, including Yalding, Headcorn, Goudhurst, Horsmonden and Collier Street.

It comes as the south east - including Kent - experienced heavy rain this week.

A yellow weather alert was in place until 6am yesterday, with the Met Office warning up to 10mm of rain could fall in one hour alone.

Up to 23 millimetres of rain fell in the River Medway catchment on Sunday, but the Environment Agency said it did not expect homes to be flooded despite high river levels.

In Leigh, Coppings Road was closed due to flooding in the carriageway on Monday.

At 7am on Monday morning water levels along the watercourse at East Farleigh Gate were dangerously high at 2.50m, but yesterday had dipped to 2.14m. Flooding is possible at 1.49m.

At Maidstone the levels were 1.21m, close to the 1.25m danger zone but had receded to 1.06m yesterday morning.

The Beult at Stilebridge which had a more comfortable, 15cm, buffer yesterday reached the level where flooding is possible on Monday evening.

The Medway at Teston remains well within the safe zone.

Students at Mascalls Academy in Maidstone Road, Paddock Wood, were told they could wear wellies to school due to the risk of footpaths in the area being flooded.

Farmers were also told to consider moving livestock from low lying fields.

But river flows peaked on Tuesday afternoon and the Environment Agency say the situation is improving, with no predictions of rising water levels today.
