Double yolk eggs sold in Maidstone's Morrisons this Easter

Special boxes of 'lucky' double yolk eggs are being sold this Easter but shoppers will need to be quick.

Only 1,000 boxes are available in the United Kingdom and some of these are heading to the Maidstone's Morrisons store.

The chance of getting a two-yolked egg at random is only one in 1,000, but those who can hen-dure the aisles can pick up a box of four for £1.50 at the Sutton Road supermarket.

'Eggsperts' at a Morrisons site in North Yorkshire use a high powered lamp which allows staff to spot the outline of the extra yolk.

Such eggs usually come from young hens between 20 and 27 weeks old. Most times, hens produce them when they lay their first batch.

Robert Hoffman, buyer at Morrisons, said: “You know it’s a lucky day, when you crack open an egg and find it has two yolks. So we wanted to bring egg-lovers extra luck by offering a four pack."

"We hope they bring customers some good fortune this Easter.”

Superstition holds getting a double-yolker can be viewed as a sign of fertility and good fortune, and according to the The Encyclopedia of Superstitions by Richard Webster, it simply signifies good luck.

Alongside the Maidstone store, shoppers can also pick up the special batches in 10 other stores across the UK.
