A country estate that was once home to royalty is on the market.
The Biddenden property, which was occupied by the King of Siam in the 1930s, is up for sale for an eye-watering £5.5 million.
The Grade II listed house, known as Vane Court, is brimming with history and dates as far back as 1419.
In 1937, the King of Siam, Rama VII, moved into the property following his abdication from the throne after a revolution in Siam that saw the country change its name to Thailand.
It marked the monarch’s return to the UK after being educated at Eton College in 1906 from the age of 13, before attending the Woolwich Military Academy until 1913.
The attic of the property, now referred to as the King’s Bedroom, was believed to be the king’s sleeping place in the Kent property due to a Siamese custom that meant no head in the house could be higher than his own.
Residents of the village, near Ashford, were also said to have spotted the king and queen on bicycle rides and at local fetes during their time in the county.
“Vane Court’s prior use as a royal residence has truly left a mark on the home,” says Will Peppitt of Savills.
“You can now sleep in what was once the King of Siam’s bedroom or spend sunny afternoons beside the King's Pond.”
The King’s bedroom is one of the property’s six bedrooms and has a crown post and fireplace, as well as a private en-suite bathroom.
The house also boasts a kitchen with granite worktops and oil-fired Aga, several reception rooms with period features and a study room that can also be used as a home gym with its own shower room.
The gardens, which feature a formal garden, sunken rose garden and water garden with the King’s Pond, are exceptionally maintained.
There’s also an outdoor heated swimming pool and a tennis court, both of which are hidden from view with hedging.
Biddenden has a convenience store, primary school and pub and can be reached in less than 30 minutes on foot or 5 minutes in the car.
Larger towns including Ashford, with rail links to London, and Tenterden are also less than a 30-minute drive away.
