TEMPORARY urinals are to be placed in Maidstone town centre at night in a bid to reduce the stench caused by people using alleyways as toilets.
The urinals will be available for a trial four-week period, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, subject to technical and planning issues being resolved by Maidstone council.
The decision to proceed with the trial was taken by Cllr Roger Berriman (Lab) the cabinet member for health and the environment, on Wednesday.
The urinals are likely to be placed at the bottom end of the High Street but the exact locations have yet to be determined as have the type of facilities that will be available.
The trial of temporary urinals is just one of a number of initiatives being introduced by the council as part of a strategy to clean up the town and support the evening and night time economy.
The absence of toilets open late at night featured significantly in a survey of business and late night town centre users.
