Maidstone United are celebrating a stunning FA Cup upset after defeating League One outfit Stevenage – and entertaining the prospect of landing Premier League opposition in the next round.

A late first-half penalty scored by Sam Corne was the only goal of the match at the Gallagher Stadium, securing the Stones a place in the draw for the fourth round for the first time in their history.

Maidstone, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, will earn £105,000 in prize money thanks to today’s win in front of a packed 4,200 crowd in the County Town.

Their victory paves the way for a potential encounter with the elite of the English game, with their name going into the hat for the next round alongside Premier League teams who also emerge victorious from this weekend’s third round fixtures.

George Elokobi’s men upset League 2 Barrow in the previous round, and will now hope their giant-killing exploits can continue as they look to keep this historic cup run alive.

The home side weathered heavy second-half pressure from their opponents, who sit 69 places above them in the football pyramid, but managed to hang on to secure the famous win.

United’s big moment came in added time at the end of the first period, when Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong was tripped in the box.

Referee Steve Martin pointed to the spot and Corne confidently beat Stevenage goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond for what proved to be the only goal of the match.
