A man has been taken to hospital after a fire at a house in Maidstone early today.

Around 20 firefighters tackled flames at the property, in Lenside Drive, from 3.40am.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said a man who was out of the semi-detached home when crews arrived was taken to hospital.

The 43-year-old suffered burns and was taken to King's College Hospital in London.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used compressed air foam to tackle the blaze.

A positive pressure ventilation fan was then used to remove smoke from the house.

Four fire crews were at the scene until 5.30am.

An investigation into how the fire started will get under way today.
