Snodland’s Jack Green beat Great Britain team-mate Nathan Woodward to win gold in the 400m hurdles at the Under-23 European Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
His victory, in a time of 49.13 seconds, continued the fine tradition of British 400m hurdlers at the event.
Green (pictured) became the fourth Briton in a row to win the title, after Rhys Williams in 2005, training partner Dai Greene in 2007 and Lloyd Gumbs in 2009.
He says it was the pressure of living up to Greene’s example four years ago that spurred him on. Green said: "It was good to win the gold medal but I was not as pleased as I thought I would be.
"I convinced myself that I was going to win, so I did not feel any different. But it is good to have a title.
"More than anything, it was a relief because Dai won it four years ago, so I was under quite a bit of pressure to win it myself - I’m not sure if I would have been allowed back if I had not won it!
"But I am confident and see myself as quite high up in the world. I expect high things of myself, so I don’t get too excited about it."
That next target is the World Championship qualifiers in Birmingham at the end of the month and then booking himself a spot on the plane to Daegu, South Korea, for the championships themselves in August.
The former Mid-Kent College student has run sub 49 seconds five times this year and believes he can go faster once he gets his stride pattern right.
Green added: "Next up for me is the World Championship trials and the worst case scenario is that I come second to Dai and get picked.
"I have run the A-standard five times this season already, so time is not the problem. I just need to ensure that no one beats me who should not beat me."
