Police are continuing their investigation into an incident at a Kent hospital in which a stroke victim was left with multiple cuts allegedly from a botched shave.

The family of Thomas Gregg, 78, say they are angry and heartbroken about his treatment.

Mr Gregg, pictured, was moved to Medway Martime Hospital's critical stroke unit after suffering falling ill while visiting family in Devon.

His family began to have concerns about his treatment, including the way pain medication was administered and an incident where a doctor allegedly failed to insert tubes properly.

But it was on October 27, when son Bill, of Cambridge Avenue, Maidstone, found his father with multiple cuts across his face, that the family put in complaints to the hospital and the police.

Mr Gregg said: "I got a phone call from a family member who had visited my father earlier in the day, telling me he had been shaved and not to panic.

"But when I saw him I went ballistic. There were cuts all over his face. It was horrific.

"There is nothing I can do about the pain and suffering my father has gone through, but by complaining I am hopefully doing something so other families don’t have to go through such heartbreaking, stressful times."

A spokesman for Medway Maritime Hospital said: "We are sorry to hear Mr Gregg’s family are dissatisfied with the care he received.

"We are fully cooperating with the police and are investigating the matter internally. We will share our findings with Mr Gregg’s family."

DI Gary Smith, of Kent Police, said: "An incident involving a patient at Medway Maritime Hospital was reported to us on Wednesday, October 28.

"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. A formal statement has been taken and further lines of inquiry are being explored."
