Temperatures in and around Maidstone could top 20 degrees on Thursday, say forecasters.

The warm weather, co-inciding with half-term, has not gone unnoticed by some of our tourist attractions and it could spark a new record.

Staff at the Hop Farm Family Park in Paddock Wood, said they had noticed an increase in usual Autumn half-term visitor numbers and many visitors were dining outside.

The Kent Messenger’s amateur weatherman, Lester Gosbee, said the week started with temperatures around 16-17C on Sunday, but that it had got steadily warmer.

On Wednesday the expected temperature is around 18-19C, which could climb to 20C on Thursday.

Mr Gosbee added: "We are getting a nice warm flow of air from the Azores and west Africa and high pressure which is why it is so warm.

"The last time we had a spell like this in October was 2005, but this time last year the temperatures in Kent were 6-7C, with wintery showers and parts of London and Surrey had snow on the ground.

"If it does hit 20C on Thursday I think that will create a new record for the date of October 29 in Kent."

And he has issued a challenge.

"Temperatures of 18-19C mean the sea temperature will be around 16C, and warm enough to go in."
