Top DJ Scott Mills answers questions about Radio 1's Big Weekend:
>>What was the first festival you ever went to?
The first one was a Radio 1 Live Event in Cardiff the summer before I started working here. It was like a mini version of what we do now on the Big Weekend. The line up included Mansun and a very young Coldplay!
>>What's your best and worst festival experiences?
The best was me and all my mates watching the Chemical Brothers at the Homelands dance festival in the blazing sunshine in Winchester.
The worst was trying to do a live radio show in the mud which I was stuck in while trying to interview Goldie Lookin Chain, who were drunk! It was at Glastonbury a few years ago. As soon as the rain comes and everything goes muddy, I HATE it! I didn't bring wellies that weekend either and ruined my new trainers. Not happy. I'm not a hardcore festival goer who will stay out if things go bad.
>>Who is your festival fashion icon?
Jo Wiley. Always looks like she is meant to be there, being a veteran of festivals. Unlike me who turns up in trainers.
>>Which band would you most like to have in your tent?
The Enemy. Because they are good lads, do great songs, and they can make a mean herb-crusted fish pie - as they did recently on Something For The Weekend on TV!
>>Are fancy Portaloos, mobile top up sites and fashion contests ruining the festival experience?
Not at all. I want to be able to call people and be in a toilet that doesn't make me want to gag.
>>With festivals like Glastonbury upping their prices, how important is the Big Weekend?
It's really important because where else in the world can you get to see some of the biggest bands on the planet for free? It really has evolved into a very good, free festival and I feel very proud to work at Radio 1 when I'm at Radio 1's Big Weekend.
>>What's going to make Maidstone the best ever Big Weekend?
The fact that we have MADONNA! I'm very excited. We've had some big stars, but never this big. There is more going on than ever before - so much live music and amazing stages. Maidstone will absolutely love it. It'll be one of the best weekends of your life.
