There’s a high level of determination - and perhaps a little smugness - among our local participants in Dry January.
Three Maidstone GPs and the leader of Maidstone council are among the thousands who took up the challenge to give up alcohol for the 31 days of January.
Already 22 days into their ordeal, most are reporting success.
Dr Bob Bowes, the chairman of the NHS West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Having told my friends and family that I am taking part in Dry January, they enjoyed trying to tempt me into a glass of wine at the weekend. They were unsuccessful, of course!”
Dr David Chesover of the Thornhills Medical Practice in Martin Square, Larkfield, said: “On the odd occasion when I may have had a glass of wine or a beer I am drinking water instead. At least it’s calorie free!”
Cllr Annabelle Blackmore, leader of Maidstone council, said: “It’s going well so far, although last weekend was quite tricky.
“It is hard to believe we’ve come so far already, how time flies! The main benefits seem to be a better sleep pattern, feeling less bloated and items in my wardrobe now fit!”
But Cllr Blackmore said: “Saturday evening will be difficult because I am attending a Burns’ Night Supper, but I will soldier on.”
Dr Tony Jones of The Vine Medical Centre in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, admitted to a small slip - at church! He said: “As the communion wine slipped past my lips a horrible thought entered my mind - Dry January!
“I was in the right place to seek forgiveness so I quickly rationalised my thoughts, forgave myself and on I went.
“Actually I think there is a principle here, we easily feel guilty about our moral slips but the important thing is we move on with our intended goal even following apparent failures.”
