THOUSANDS of parents, teachers and governors are to be given the chance to have their say on plans for all Kent schools to switch to a six-term year, it was decided today.

Kent County Council is to embark on a major consultation exercise within weeks after a cross-party investigation recommended the move. County education chiefs say the views of those who stand to be affected will be a key factor in their final decision.

However, if opinion is in favour, schools could change to a new school year in the autumn of 2003. KCC is also planning to consult with neighbouring education authorities, many of whom are also thought to be altering the school year.

Every parent of school-age children in the county is expected to be sent a letter detailing the option of a six-term year.

Teachers and governors will also be formally consulted. The decision to consult was taken at a meeting of KCC’s cabinet.
