Work on one of a town’s medieval bridges is going to close a key route for more than a month.
Repairs will be carried out on the Teston Bridge over the River Medway in Maidstone starting on Monday, October 28.
As a result, Teston Lane, the B2163, will be closed from 20m on either side of the bridge.
The work is expected to take until December 1.
The official diversion route is via the B2010 Lower Road, B2010 Smiths Hill, B2010 Yalding Hill, B2010 High Street, B2162 Benover Road, B2162 Hampstead Lane, B2015 Maidstone Road, B2015 Bow Road, A26 Tonbridge Road, B2163 Teston Lane and vice versa.
Pedestrian access will be maintained during the works.
The work is being undertaken by Kent County Council who will run a helpline for queries about the scheme’s progress on 03000 418181.
Teston Bridge, which connects Lower Road in West Farleigh to Tonbridge Road in Teston, is used by many drivers as a key route to cross the river while avoiding entering Maidstone town centre.
Teston Bridge is made of ragstone and comprises six arches. It was first built in the 14th century, although a substantial section was rebuilt in the early 1800s.
The bridge, which is only wide enough for one lane, has been struck by vehicles many times over the years.
Its closure is expected to have knock-on delays at Yalding Bridge and East Farleigh Bridge.
