Lashings Cricket Club are to hold talks with Pakistan’s exiled wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider on Monday.

Zulqarnain arrived in the UK last week, having fled the Pakistan camp after receiving death threats for refusing to play any part in an alleged attempt to throw the fourth one-day international with South Africa.

His unbeaten knock of 19 from 22 balls saw Pakistan to a thrilling one-wicket win, with just one ball to spare, but after allegedly receiving death threats from a match fixing ring, he flew to England before the fifth game, which South Africa won to take the series 3-2.

Lashings chairman David Folb, pictured, has made contact with Zulqarnain through former Pakistan wicket-keeper Rashid Latif – himself a Lashings stalwart – and hopes to sign the 24-year-old for the summer.

Mr Folb said: "At Lashings we have a long and proud tradition of helping those in need.

"We’re optimistic that we can reach a deal. I’ve spoken to Zulqarnain’s solicitor and his media people and I’m hoping we can agree a contract for the 2011 season."
