A musical introduction to the Battle of Maidstone will be held in the town tonight (Saturday), with the Proms in the Park concert.

The event at the Riverstage, Whatman Park, which starts at 7.30pm, is a prelude to Sunday's commemoration and re-enactment of the Civil War battle between Cavaliers and Roundheads, when the Royalists stormed the town on June 1, 1648.

David Pickett, one of the organisers of the celebrations, said: “We must also remember that people died in Maidstone on both sides of the battle. It is part of Maidstone’s real history but there should be an element of remembrance to it, too.”

On Sunday, there will be a craft and food fair in the High Street from 10.30am to 4pm, while the re-enactment will be in Gabriel’s Hill and Week Street from 11am to noon.

There will be a living history exhibition at Maidstone Museum, in St Faith’s Street, from 12.30pm to 4pm.
