An evening of prayer for the election and local candidates will be held at Maidstone Leisure Centre in Mote Park tonight

Prayers will be said tonight for the UK economy.

Not because it has passed away, but because church leaders want people to pray for election issues and the candidates themselves.

The Election Focus prayer evening at Maidstone Leisure Centre in Mote Park will, organisers believe, be the first event of its kind.

Put together by Churches Together in Maidstone, the aim is to inspire honesty, integrity and humanity.

They have been filming short interviews from local candidates which will be shown at the beginning of the night and have released a "teaser" video to whet visitors' appetites.

Host Canon Andrew Sewell, who is chairman of Churches Together and vicar of St Paul’s Church, said: “Politicians get a lot of stick. But it’s worth remembering these are people who get involved because they want to make the world a better place.

"Whatever you feel about their policies, prayer is one way of supporting them.”

The event runs from 7.30pm to 9pm.
