The bright lights and thumping beats have vanished. The dance floor now lies still and dark as the floor of a crypt or forgotten attic.
Give it any longer and rumours will begin to abound that the cavernous interior of Lockmeadow in Maidstone – once home to the Liquid and Envy, Jumpin’ Jaks and Hotshots clubs – is haunted.
And something is stirring in the depths of the building, but it is something curiouser and curiouser rather than anything paranormal.
Later this month, when the first revellers enter they will enter the surreal world of Wonderland, a brand new club inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
"Step through the looking glass" invites the club’s new website, while visitors to its Facebook page are told, enigmatically, to “follow the White Rabbit” to find out more.
The Facebook page adds: “We want to inject something a little bit of different to your nightlife, sprinkle on a little stardust to your regular evenings out and show you the world from a different perspective.”
Precise information about an opening date has not been announced.
Lockmeadow owners X Leisure confirmed previously that the complex would undergo a complete refurbishment, which began in July, and that nightclub operator No Saints would redevelop the upper floor of the building.
The plan is to bring the building back to life with a new family entertainment centre, complete with bowling alley and Wonderland club.
A new restaurant, Yummy’s, is also expected to open in the new look building.
