If you're frantically hunting for a last minute Christmas gift with less than a week to go Lenham's Chilston Park Hotel may have just what you're looking for.

I was unsure what to expect when I arrived at the ideally located stately home — it's a stone's throw from the M20 and the Channel Tunnel — in July for a Christmas-themed banquet but was blown away by the scale of grandeur both inside and out.

Each of the 53 rooms offers something truly unique but equally majestic — we stayed in The Regency suite in levels of comfort you'd be hard pushed to find elsewhere.

The £148-a-night room's period features, four poster bed and views across the stunning grounds really set our stay off on the right track.

It is one of 15 rooms situated in the main house, with the remainder, including feature rooms, located in the stables and coachman's cottages and offering courtyard views and something a bit more eccentric.

We then embarked on a Christmas feast, the scale of which made the eyes boggle and the mouth water — and that was just on paper.

There was plenty to please both the meat-eaters and vegetarians in the room, and for those more partial to liquid refreshments the eight different wines perfectly matched to each course were almost exclusively lip-smackingly good.

The morning after the night before and breakfast was served in the classically decorated Culpepper’s Restaurant.
