Work has finally begun on a new retirement village in Leeds.
Ledian Gardens will ultimately deliver 115 one- and two- bedroom homes for the over 65s, centred around a clubhouse that will include a swimming pool, spa, gym, restaurant and shop that will be open to the public.
Construction company Gallaghers has started building the main access road through the village, which is expected to take three months. This preparatory precedes the work of the main contractor, which is yet to be appointed, to complete the main building works of the site.
The project is being managed by Inspired Villages. Chief executive Jamie Bunce said: "Our appointment of the Gallagher Group reflects our mission to enhance the communities in which we build our retirement villages and support local businesses.
"Last year we appointed Jane Shotliff as community liaison manager for Ledian Gardens to engage with the local community and ensure the village becomes an integral part of life in the area.
“Through the delivery of Ledian Gardens we are helping to address the chronic shortage of age-appropriate housing in the UK and we are also proud that the village will create new jobs in the area.”
The seven-acre site off Upper Street was first granted planning permission in January 2014. Inspired Villages bought the site last year.
The first phase of homes is due to open in November 2020 will consist of 66 apartments and the communal central facilities. All the homes at Ledian Gardens will have the option of assisted living. Prices for the homes start from £275,000.
Inspired Villages already own and operate six retirement villages in Cheshire, Hampshire, Warwickshire, West Sussex and Devon.
