Maidstone athlete Jack Green has vowed to bring home a medal from the World Junior Championships in Canada after booking his ticket with gold at the England Under-23 & Under-20 Championships.
He stormed to victory in the 400m hurdles, beating reigning champion Niall Flannery in 51.54secs.
The 18-year-old dipped under the championship qualification mark last month at Loughborough but still needed to top the podium in Bedford to secure his place in the Great Britain team.
Despite his success, Green (pictured) – who now sits top of the UK rankings for the 400m hurdles – was critical of his performance and believes he can run the race of his life in Canada next month.
He said: "That was probably the worst race I have run all year. I managed to hit every hurdle with my wrong leg but luckily it didn’t cost me."
"My aim was to run a personal best and hopefully get a medal, so I’m pleased to have won the race.
"When I go to Canada, I want to run a British record and if I can do that I know I have a good chance of getting involved in the medals."
He added: "I have the senior nationals coming up in Birmingham and then a run out in Germany for Great Britain before I compete in the Super8 and the World Juniors."
Green, who ran a personal best of 51.49 in Loughborough on May 23, has just under a month to prepare for the World Junior Championships in Moncton which start on July 19.
