Jay Saunders is hoping the cold snap does his Maidstone United side a favour in their race for promotion from Ryman League Division 1 South.

Saturday’s game at Merstham was called-off less than four hours before kick-off and the freezing conditions and snowfall mean Folkestone’s visit to Bourne Park on Saturday is likely to be postponed.

Stones boss Saunders said: "There was five inches of snow still on the pitch on Thursday and unless there is a heatwave there’s no chance of the game going on."

United sit fourth but have played more games than any other side in the table, with leaders Bognor Regis and second-placed Whitehawk having two games in hand and third-placed Dulwich Hamlet three.

Saunders said: "One bonus for us with these postponenents is that the other teams at the top are going to have a lot of games to fit in.

"Everyone says we have played more games than anyone and so we’re worse off, but it means we have quite a few free midweeks to play rearranged games.

"They are going to end up playing three games a week most weeks until the end of the season to catch up."
