Man in court after alleged assault with baseball bat in Square Hill Road at its junction with Mote Road in Maidstone

A man will appear in court after allegedly assaulting someone with a baseball bat and smashing a van window.

The road was closed for hours with bystanders describing the scene as “pure chaos”, as forensics vans were called in.

A man in his 30s was assaulted before being taken to hospital for treatment to “serious” injuries.

Leonard Smith, 38, of Stilebridge Lane in Marden, has since been charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and criminal damage.

He appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (April 5) and was remanded to a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday, May 2.

The victim was later discharged from hospital and officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to the police to contact them.

Motorists with dashcam’s are also asked to check for relevant footage.
