A man was taken to hospital after threatening to jump from the roof of the Mall Chequers in Maidstone last night.

Police and fire crews were called to the shopping centre near Maidstone Bus Station at about 5pm.

Roads around the centre were closed off and town bus services suspended while a trained negotiating team was called in to talk the man down.

The man, aged between 50 and 60, came down of his own volition at about 6pm.

He was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

Roads reopened and bus services returned to normal shortly after 6pm.
