Rescuers save man who fell in River Medway at Maidstone

A passerby jumped in the River Medway this evening after a man fell in the water.

Police were called, and an officer was seen running through the bushes between the road and the river in Maidstone.

Another man is believed to have then jumped in, while the officer is thought to have taken off his shoes and prepared to jump.

Witnesses saw rescuers throw the man a line and bring him out of the water.

Two patrol cars and around eight officers attended the scene near the Archbishop's Palace.

The man was hauled to safety.

A police spokesman confirmed they attended, but said no officers went into the water.
