A man is being treated for serious injuries in a London hospital after he was assaulted in a town centre park.

The victim was airlifted to the capital following the attack in Brenchley Gardens, Maidstone, last night.

Police say they were called to the scene at 7.20pm.

The injured man was taken by land ambulance to nearby Mote Park, where a helicopter was waiting for him.

His injuries are described as "serious", but no further details about the nature of the assault have been made public.

A Victorian bandstand in Brenchley Gardens has been taped off by police.

Police have carried out investigations in the park, which is described as an "oasis of calm" by Visit Maidstone.
