Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s will open a new convenience store in Maidstone this year.
Work is underway on the site of the former BP petrol garage in Tonbridge Road, on the stretch between the Spice Fusion restaurant and Cherry Tree pub.
The retailer will create 20 full and part-time jobs at the branch, which will sell food, drinks and other convenience products.
A company spokesman said: “Sainsbury’s Local provides the same quality as our larger supermarkets, but on a smaller scale. It is designed to cater for people living and working within walking distance of the shop.”
Some residents fear the store will cause more congestion in the area.
Sainsbury’s announced plans for a similar store in Coxheath in February.
