A DRIVER managed to pull over and jump free from his car when it burst into flames while he was at the wheel.

The motorist, who escaped unhurt, was driving along the A20 at Hollingbourne, near Maidstone, as his silver Rover caught fire unexpectedly.

Police had to close the single carriageway road as firefighters extinguished the burning car.

It is thought the fire started because of a fault with the car. The incident happened at about 7.45pm on Sunday.

The road was reopened at 8.30pm, and the vehicle was recovered some hours later, after it had cooled.
