A new leisure centre. A new cinema. A new Sainsbury’s.
Tonbridge town centre could look so different in years to come.
Exciting plans detailing the potential regeneration of the town centre go on display today and tomorrow.
The joint venture between Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and Sainsbury’s includes a proposal for a new leisure and community centre in Bradford Street which would house a three-court, multi-purpose sports hall, gym and fitness studio.
There are also plans for a flagship Sainsbury’s store, a six-screen cinema, petrol station, restaurants and improved car parking.
The borough council said the multi-million pound scheme could draw shoppers back to Tonbridge and launch an economic recovery at no cost to the council tax payer.
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council leader Nicolas Heslop said: “We are looking forward to receiving the local community’s feedback because this will play a valuable role in shaping the final vision for Tonbridge town centre.
“The provision of an improved retail and leisure offer, the creation of new jobs, enhanced public spaces and car parking supported by a significant investment by Sainsbury’s is a ‘once-in-a-generation’ opportunity for us.”
Sainsbury’s portfolio development manager Ross Castle said: “We are really pleased to be working with the council to bring forward an exciting new retail and leisure destination for Tonbridge.
"The multi-million pound investment will regenerate the town centre and create hundreds of new jobs for local people.”
The public can visit an exhibition of the plans in Tonbridge Castle between 10am and 8pm and tomorrow between 10am and 4pm.
