Baby spat at in Cobtree Road, Coxheath

A young mum was left "shaking" with fury after a hooligan spat at her baby daughter and then cycled away laughing.

Eleven-month-old Esme Wilkinson was lying in her buggy while being taken for her daily walk by her gran in Cobtree Road, Coxheath, when two boys on bikes rode past and one of them spat in her direction.

Cycling away, the pair turned back and laughed, with Mia's gran, whose own mum had only passed away a couple of days ago, shouting at them.

The incident happened yesterday at 2pm.

Mum, Mia Fernandez, 22, a carer, said: "It's disgusting. I was shaking when she phoned me. I just thought 'how could someone do that?'

"I didn't know whether to cry or shout. My little girl is so sweet and innocent.

"I phoned the police and they said I should disinfect the pram and wash her."

Both looked between the ages of 12 and 16, according to Mia's mum-in-law, who does not wish to be named.

Mia and her fiancé Bruce Wilkinson, 23, who works in a warehouse and is currently on furlough, went looking for the culprits, in order to report what had happened to their parents.

"I got in my car and said 'right Bruce we have got to find them'. If my child was behaving like that I would want to know."

The couple, who are staying with Bruce's parents during the pandemic as there is more space, did not find the boys but reported what happened to the police.

Mia, who is currently on maternity leave, but works in Maidstone for Bluebird Care, said: "I was deliberating whether to report it because they were so young but I thought they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it."

James Walker, spokesman for police said: "Kent Police is investigating a report a woman who was pushing a pram in Cobtree Road, Coxheath, was spat at while two boys cycled past her.

"Inquiries are ongoing and anyone who believes they have information that can assist officers is asked to call Kent Police."
