A prisoner's death has prompted a murder investigation.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an inmate in his 20s at HMP Maidstone died yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to the prison at 3.33pm yesterday following concerns for the welfare of an inmate.

The ambulance service also attended and the man was declared deceased by medical crews.

His next of kin have been made aware.

The Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate has launched a murder investigation and a 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into police custody.
