Around 300 people piled into Jubilee Square following the Three Lions' defeat to Italy.
Roberto Mancini's side won 3-2 on penalties after extra time ended at 1-1.
But late last night, crowds descended on the town centre. Bottles were thrown at officers and a member of the public's car was damaged. Of the nine officers assaulted, five received medical treatment.
People clambered over benches in Jubilee Square, others could be seen confronting police and a red flare was set off.
Officers formed into lines in the High Street and police dogs were also brought in to deter revellers.
Ch Supt Warren Franklin, from Kent Police, said that footage is being reviewed to identify suspects."
In a statement he said: "The vast majority of people in Kent behaved responsibly throughout Sunday, with our officers working with councils and businesses to ensure everyone could safely enjoy the football.
"As has been the case throughout the tournament, there was a visible police presence in town centres to help achieve this end.
"Towards the end of the game on 11 July, and immediately after the conclusion, a number of separate groups of people in Maidstone town centre chose to engage in disorder.
"Objects, including bottles, were thrown at officers and criminal damage was also caused to a car belonging to a member of the public.
"Our patrols were able to keep the disorder to a minimum, and confined to the Jubilee Square area. Nine officers reported being assaulted and five received treatment from a nurse at Maidstone Police Station. No serious injuries were sustained.
"Two men are currently in custody, having been arrested in connection with the disorder.
"Elsewhere in the county, our officers dealt with isolated pockets of disruption which led to some further arrests. The vast majority of people, however, behaved in a courteous manner.
"Those who did engage in disruption can expect to hear from us in due course, as we are actively reviewing footage, including that taken from our body worn cameras, to identify any outstanding suspects.

They have made sure the area is clear of any rubbish, particularly around Jubilee Square.”

Speaking to Kent Online, she said: "Such a shame to see the reports of violence among some football fans in the town centre after the match.
"The police really do an amazing job along with venue security staff in trying to keep everyone safe and situations under control.
She added that the bar had a "fantastic night" and there was an "absolutely electric atmosphere."
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has condemned the "appalling" racist abuse of England players on social media after their defeat last night.
Boris Johnson said the team deserved to be hailed as “heroes” and not subjected to hatred online, adding that those who sent abuse should be “ashamed of themselves”.
The Football Association also issued a statement saying it is “appalled”, while the Metropolitan Police vowed to investigate.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all failed from the spot on Sunday night as England went down on penalties.
The trio’s social media pages were quickly flooded with racist comments, leading the Prime Minister and the FA to condemn the “disgusting behaviour”.
