Maidstone Mile

More than 100 runners sped through the streets of Maidstone in celebration of the Olympic flame's arrival in the town.

The KM Maidstone Mile run was held on Friday afternoon, and among the field were torchbearers from Kent who had taken the symbolic flame through the county's streets earlier that day.

Runners gathered at the top of the High Street and completed a course that led them along Week Street, down St Faith's Street, left along Fairmeadow and then back up the High Street.

Also among the field was Maidstone & the Weald MP Helen Grant (Con) and Maidstone council cabinet member Cllr John A Wilson (Con).

Former Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew was there to cheer on participants at the finish line, and undertook starter's duties at the Maidstone Mile swim, just over an hour later in the River Medway.

The event raised money for Heart of Kent Hospice, which is the KM's charity of the year.
