David Knight first came across Maidstone River Festival in 1996 when he sat on the banks of the Medway soaking up the atmosphere
Two years later he was organising the event.
Now he is preparing for his 10th festival on Saturday.
He admits that he didn’t set out to take control, but it’s a trait of his.
“I do have very strong views of what’s right and wrong and if there is no organiser, I tend to do it.”
He adds: “I can’t stand indecision. If I find things aren’t being organised, I poke my oar in.”
He has put a lot of effort into the River Festival over the years because it is an event he is passionate about.
“It has been hard work. In my early years I always felt we were the poor relations; we were at odds with everybody else in the town.
“But I don’t think that’s the case so much these days. "
He added:
“But it’s a family event. It is for people to have a good time. And I think more and more that is recognised by everyone.”
