The company’s incident manager, Steve Benton, said: “The rapid thaw following the period of cold weather has caused a rise in the number of leaks and bursts across our supply area.

“This has caused our treated water storage tanks to run low, meaning customers could experience intermittent water supply.

“We have an incident team in place and are monitoring the situation very closely.

“There may be periods when your community does not have a water supply or may experience low pressure.

“We are incredibly sorry for the disruption. Please be assured we are doing everything possible to resolve the problems quickly.”

His warning comes after a burst water main in Mote Road caused road closures and severe disruption in the town centre on Monday.

The company is currently dealing with leaks in Hackney Road, Wolfe Raod, Stockett Lane, Valley Drive, Cranborne Avenue and Cripple Street.

Burst water mains in Loose Road and in Sutton Road, which caused a water outage yesterday, have now been fixed and supply restored.

Cty Cllr Chris Passmore said: “We must face the reality that there has been long-term neglect of our ageing water supply systems, much of which lies under our main roads, ever since the privatisation of the water industry by the Conservatives in the 1980s.

“With the impact of increasingly extreme climate conditions, both hot and cold, it seems inevitable that we will have to expect further emergency disruption until the system has been properly updated.

“Frustratingly we are now all going to have to face much higher water bills to make up for the lack of investment which should have been made over previous decades.”
