A historic medical theatre and chemical experiments helped to launch Science Week with a bang at New Line Learning Academy.
Students in years 7 and 8 had front row seats for a realistic surgery workshop, inspired by techniques used by doctors and scientists many centuries ago. To bring the scene to life, teacher Rebecca Holness improvised with a fake patient and animal organs.
Jill Hatch, head of science at the Boughton Lane school, said: “The historic surgery theatre was a great way to make the lesson more realistic. The students were really engaged and loved watching the demonstration.
“The whole week has been fantastic. There’s been a real buzz of excitement, which is what the wonderful world of science is all about.”
Other activities held throughout the week included a bee hotel workshop, which saw students build shelters to help protect the flying insects, while at nearby Tiger Primary children enjoyed Ancient Greece themed activities.
Year groups also tasted Huel, a nutritionally complete food for humans, watched chemical explosions and enjoyed a trip to the Natural History Museum.
Each lunchtime, students and staff had the opportunity to enter the academy’s Hall of Flame. Entrants had to pull their best expression while a scientist set fire to a pile of bubbles in their hands. Photos of the volunteers were put on display with named as the winner.
