Week Street in Maidstone covered in litter after Euros final

Pictures of a town centre show the mess left in the aftermath of England’s defeat against Spain in the Euros final.

Betting slips, fast food packets and alcohol bottles covered the streets of Maidstone Town Centre first thing this morning.

Dirk Wickenden took photos of the mess made by fans last night at around 8.15am (July 15).

He said: “When I saw it, it was like the Charlton Heston dystopian films Soylent Green and The Omega Man.”

But, the council were quick to react and while in the town centre, Dirk saw the cleansing team in action.

A spokesman for the council said: “The Street Cleansing Team was on the case, as usual with these events.

“They advised that the extra waste on the roads and town centre was expected but they used very little extra resources to clean up after the Euro’s final last night.

“The team worked an additional 12 hours, during yesterday afternoon and overnight along with their scheduled regular early morning street cleansing.

“The council clean-up crews were out again this morning and the town was restored to its regular high standard of cleanliness by 7.45am.

“This was a great effort from the whole team, given the extra work required.

“The total additional cost was in the region of £300.”

Elsewhere in the county, a fight broke out in Folkestone within minutes of the final whistle being blown.
