While technically a gaffe is unintentional there are few other words that better describe David Cameron’s near identical letters sent to a number of local newspapers ahead of English Tourism Week.
The articles, which were apparently written by the Prime Minister himself, confessed his adoration of counties across the country.
While Mr Cameron’s fondness for Kent was never expected to be unique the numerous other letters sent to newspaper groups in other parts of England bore more than a passing resemblance.
Writing exclusively for the KM Group he declared “I love Kent,” while the Newcastle Chronicle received a letter beginning “I love Northumberland,” and for the Lincolnshire Echo he wrote “I love Lincolnshire.”
"I love Kent." — David Cameron
The letter continues: “From the stunning countryside to the unique historic buildings, this county is one of the many jewels in Great Britain’s crown.”
For the north-east: “From Hadrian’s Wall to Europe’s biggest sky park, this county is one of the many jewels in Great Britain’s crown.”
For the Lincolnshire Echo: “From the quaint market towns to the rolling countryside, this county is one of the many jewels in Great Britain’s crown.”
Mr Cameron then spoke of a visit he had made to the garden of England and said he remembers going to some antique shops in Deal.
He goes on to explain the investment being made in Kent and the intention to drag tourists out of the capital to explore its many charms before going on to focus on Thanet.
The Yorkshire Post, one of several papers to receive the ‘generic love letters’, refused to print it as Mr Cameron had failed to respond to questions about flooding in the county and instead ran an open letter to the Prime Minister on its front page.
The paper’s comment editor described the article as a “carpet bomb PR drop,” and accused Mr Cameron’s communication team of duping local newspapers.
The Prime Minister’s office has been approached for comment.
